We're just a couple of weeks away from the official arrival of spring in the Great Smoky Mountains. It's starting to gradually warm up around here, and we're seeing the first peeks of spring color and budding vegetation. Spring also means that things start to heat up in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville in anticipation of the arrival of visitors from all over the world.
In addition to all the attractions, shops and restaurants you'll find in the area, the various communities in the Smokies host a wide range of special events this spring, and one of the first you can enjoy is the Winter Carnival of Magic at the Country Tonite Theatre in Pigeon Forge. It's this weekend, March 8 through 10, and this three-day convention offers lectures, a close-up competition and a stage competition for magicians from all over the nation. But there are also two evening performances that the public is invited to attend and be amazed. Learn more by calling the theater at 865-453-2003.
Also, this is Irish month at the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge. Through the end of March, they'll be saluting all things Irish at the Titanic, including Gaelic folklore, music, singing and dancing. You'll learn a lot about Titanic's Irish roots, including the fact that the ship was built there as well as the fact that there were more Irish people on board than any other nationality.
If you happen to be a resident of Sevier County, you can get an early taste of a couple of local attractions at discounted prices, before the seasonal crowds file in. Alcatraz East Crime Museum is hosting its 2nd Annual Local Appreciation Days through this weekend, March 11, when $5 general admission gets area residents in, along with ID or proof of local employment. This applies to residents of Blount, Cocke, Jefferson and Knox counties as well.
And through this Thursday, March 8, all Tennessee residents can get into Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies for only $10. This discount is applicable upon presentation of a valid Tennessee ID.
These are just a few of the special happenings going on around here for the next week or two, and they should help sweeten what's always a great experience when you visit the Great Smoky Mountains.

About Leif Palmer
Leif Palmer loves residing in the Smoky Mountains. He is an avid outdoorsman: rowing for exercise on the lake, trail hiking, and free climbing rocks in the mountains. He indulges his arty side by periodically beating up pieces of marble by sculpting. He is always frustrated by his inability to sink long putts, and hates his curly hair (but his wife loves it). Leif has been known to muster enough courage to change a diaper, and hopes his son will become a chip off the old block.
